İstanbul Bilgi University’s European Institute has the pleasure of announcing the conference on ‘Turkish and French Visions of Foreign Policy’ , part of the conference series within the scope of the “INTERACT : EU, France, Turkey University Dialogue Project”. The project is run by the European Institute, in partnership with Institut Français d’Etudes Annatoliennes (IFEA) and Sciences Po Paris.
Within the last few years, French and Turkish foreign policy have displayed significant changes that lead the observers to speak of the rise of new foreign policies in both countries. France returned to full NATO membership, renewed its approach regarding the Middle East conflict, and promoted a new vision of the European building process based on a more active involvement of the member-states. Turkey, which was successful in opening negotiations with the EU in 2005, increased at the same time its room of manoeuvre towards the US and its European allies, improved its relations with Russia and boosted its foreign initiatives in the Middle East, the Caucasus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
How is it possible to assess these moves while considering the fact that the foreign policies of the two countries also demonstrate a certain degree of continuity, which can be traced back to their histories and traditions? In the frame of this conference, held by the “INTERACT: EU, France, Turkey University Dialogue” Project which aims to achieve better mutual understanding between the civil societies of both countries, specialists from academia, foreign service and the media will try to answer this question by a detailed and comparative review of Turkish and French foreign policy.
Prof. Dr. Bertrand Badie (Sciences Po Paris), Prof. Dr. Frederic Charillon (University of Auvergne Clermont, Sciences PO Paris, ENA), Prof. Dr. İlter Turan (İstanbul Bilgi University), Soli Özel (İstanbul Bilgi University), Prof. Dr. Gencer Özcan (İstanbul Bilgi University), Volkan Vural (Former Ambassador) and Prof. Dr. Jean Marcou (IFEA Senior Researcher and University of Grenoble) will be among the speakers of the conference.
Kind regards,
Prof. Dr. Ayhan Kaya
Director, European Institute
