INTERACT: France, Turkey, EU University Dialogue
Summer School on:

“Managing Diversity: EU and Turkey”

The academic objective of the summer school is to disseminate knowledge on institutions and policies of the EU and Turkey in the course of Turkey’s accession process, with a specific focus on the role of civil society, public opinion, immigration, culture, democracy and foreign policy.

Project Activities

1) List of Project Activities:

SCIENTIFIC INTERACTION:

  • Visiting fellows: 8 professors from İstanbul Bilgi University and 8 professors from Sciences Po undertaking academic stays at respective institutions.
  • Doctoral/Postdoctoral Research fellows: One doctoral/post-doctoral research fellows from France to occupy a post at BİLGİ, one doctoral/post-doctoral research fellow from Turkey to occupy post at Science Po.
  • Expert Task Force: An expert task force of 12 doctoral/post-doctoral (6 from Turkey, 6 from France) research fellows from Turkish and French Universities to convene twice, once in Paris within the scope of the action.
  • Joint Research Project: An interdisciplinary and comparative research project, aiming at the comparative analysis of different forms of regional development in selected underdeveloped regions of a founding member state (France), a recent member state (Poland) and a negotiating candidate country (Turkey).

NETWORKING ACTIVITIES:

  • NGO Workshop Mettings: Two NGO Workshop Meetings (one at BİLGİ, one at Sc Po) will be organised with the aim of bringing together civil society representatives from Turkey and France to enhance communication and understanding between the two sides
  • Thematic Awareness Raising Conference 1 in Istanbul: A half day thematic / awareness raising conference entitled “Comparative Perspectives on Managing Diversity: EU, France and Turkey, held at BİLGİ on 04.12.2008.
  • Thematic / Awareness Raising Conference 2 in Istanbul: A half-a-day conference entitled "Turkish and French Visions of Foreign Policy", to be held in BİLGİ on 22 October 2009.
  • Thematic / Awareness Raising Conference 3 in Istanbul: A half-a-day conference entitled "Governance in the EU: Challenges of a New Era in the EU", to be held in BİLGİ on 05 November 2009.
  • Final Evaluation Conference: A one-day final evalation conference for the INTERACT project, entitled “Civil Society Dialogue Between France and Turkey: Transcending Stereoypes”, to be held in BİLGİ on 12 November 2009.

DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION/TRAINING:

  • Summer School: The one-month summer school entitled “EU Borders and Enlargement” as a medium between academic information passed onto a number of 20 third and fourth year undergraduate students from EU and the candidate states.
  • Permanent Course: One semester course on “France and the EU: Politics, Society and Culture”, at the MA level in the Department of International Relations of BİLGİ by Jean Marcou, professor of Institut des Sciences Politiques-Grenoble and senior scientific researcher at IFEA.
  • Publications: Various publication activities will also ensure sustainable dissemination of the results and the activities of the action.
  • Website: Short reports or copies of lectures/presentations of visiting fellows will be published on the project sub-site prepared by the BİLGİ team. “OVIPOT” sub-site under IFEA website will also be translated into Turkish.
